WATERAID GHANA HEALTHY START PROJECT

WaterAid Ghana WASH and HEALTH focal person, Dr. Chaka Uzondu, gave an overview of healthy start at a brief internal launch in the conference room of WaterAid Ghana (WAG). He led stuff members in a discussion of the scoping study of WAG and conducted on the environment phase of WaterAid's Global Advocacy Priority 2 (GAP 2) He explained why integrating WASH into health was so important for newborns, infants and child health. He used illustrations to explain how repeated bouts of diarrhoea negativity affected a child's intestines and its capacity to absorb nutrients.
Dr. Chaka also shared data on the state of WASH facilities in Some health institutions and schools. This information was gathered from the mapping of WASH facilities in some health institutions and schools of select districts. He concluded by providing a brief outline of the Healthy Start campaign. Which aims to engage youth in advocacy for greater linkages between Health, Education and WASH sectors. The short- Term objective hygiene promotion exercise in the ongoing national sanitation day campaign. There was also a media launch of Healthy Start, the launch was attended by some partners and the media. The Winner of the 2014 Ghana most beautiful pageant, Miss Bentie Abigail Baciara was at the function. She is expected to support WaterAid Ghana with publicity and campaign for Healthy Start. WaterAid Ghana also introduced the Healthy Start project to Ghana's Parliamentary Health Committee. A delegation made up of the Country Representative, Dr. Afia S. Zakiya, Head of Policy and Partnership, Ibrahim Musah, Policy Manager Dr. Chaka Uzondu and Communication and Campaign Officer Kafui Nyaku and a member of the Strategic Advisory Committee of WaterAid Ghana, Mrs Martha Osei, met with the parliamentarians.
This was an initiative to build " Parliamentary Champions ". This initiative seeks to win the interest of inspirational leaders among parliamentarians to champion Healthy Start. Dr. Afia S. Zakiya made a presentation on WaterAid Ghana operations and the Healthy Start Project. Mrs Martha Osei also made a presentation on the " The critical yet neglected linkages between WASH and HEALTH ". Four youth groups ( numbering 22 young men and ladies) representing different suburbs of the Greater Accra region held a WASH and Health forum. This is part of the broader capacity building support to engage the youth as advocates in their communities to promote WASH-Health linkages. They were from Ashiaman, Nima, Amasaman, Maamobi, Newtown, and Achimota. The training was organised by the policy and partnership were department of WaterAid Ghana. The participants were trained to discuss sanitation, water and health issues in their communities on different platforms such as radio, TV community engagements, rallies e.t.c.. The training forms part of preparations for awareness raising activities on the linkages between WASH and Health. The youth are planning to embark on a raise awareness about the appalling water and sanitation situation in their communities. The youth group will also embark on advocacy exercise to influence duty bearers to ensure open defecation is stopped in the communities.
