1.3 Billion Africans Don't Have Electricity. Akon Is Starting Something

Image
That’s how hip-hop and R&B artist and producer Akon described using solar energy to bring power to hundreds of millions of Africans. The Missouri-born Senegalese American had just trekked to Mali from an inaugural meeting in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) with top West African leaders to talk about renewable energy solutions. “Africa needs to be sustainable for a long time and be a crutch for the rest of world instead of the other way around,” Akon told ThinkProgress in a phone interview. “A stable Africa helps the world.” Akon joined five prime ministers representing Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, and Togo who gathered in the Ivory Coast’s economic capital of Abidjan for the West African Energy Leaders Group — a conference for business and political leaders working to develop strategies to address the region’s energy crisis. “Because of the [lack of infrastructure] in Africa, we need more financial institutions to be a part of it, and partner with people who have a vision for A

The X Factor 2015: Watch Reggie N Bollie perform 'I Gotta Feeling'/'I Like To Move It'

Reggie (31) and Bollie (29) both originally hail from Ghana but have been living in the UK with their families for the past five years. They are no strangers to the music business, with the pair both separately releasing material in their native Ghana. The duo think Cheryl is the “perfect mentor” as “she’s been in a band for longer than us and has won The X Factor multiple times”. Fascinating Fact: In Ghana, Reggie released three songs in 2006 called Virgin, For Sale and Adoma. In 2004, Bollie also had a hit called You May Kiss The Bride. Reggie N' Bollie closed The X Factor semi-finals on a high note with an energetic mash-up of 'I Gotta Feeling' and 'I Like To Move It' by Black Eyed Peas and Reel 2 Rea. The duo brought the party and got a lot of love from the judges and the audience Simon Cowell compared it to their less-well-received first performance: "You made me believe that this would be a terrible semi-final with the first song, but you had that up

Milli Vanilli Lost Their Grammy For Lip Syncing Someone Else's Songs

Image
20 Years Ago Today, Milli Vanilli Lost Their Grammy For Lip Syncing Someone Else's Songs Lip sync fails are not uncommon these days. But November 19, 1990 saw the culminating moment of one of the most shameful not-actually-singing debacles in pop music history: it was the day Milli Vanilli was stripped of their Grammy. Milli Vanilli started as the brainchild of German producer and songwriter Frank Farian. In early 1988, Farian recorded a group album with a slew of vocalists, but, finding them unmarketable, recruited dancer/models Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan to front the group when the album was released in the summer of that year. Note that singing is not, at this point, on their resume. If the European record didn't necessarily state that the handsome frontmen were the ones actually singing the songs, by the time the American album, reworked extensively by Arista Records, was released in early 1989, all trace of the original vocalists had vanished. After a string of

Did Prophet Muhammad Warn Us of ISIS?

Image
In separate attacks last week, ISIS terrorists killed 39 tourists at a beach resort in Tunisia, and close to 30 worshipers at a Shia Mosque in Kuwait. The onslaught came shortly after the group called on its militant Jihadi sympathizers to expand operations in the month of Ramadan. ISIS has demonstrated an unflinching determination to take out anyone who dares to disagree with it. Its members have slaughtered Yazidis and Christians, but the vast majority of its victims have been Muslims who resist it and refuse to acknowledge its authority. ISIS has even executed Sunni clerics who refused to swear allegiance to it, and Muslim women who did not submit to its worldview. This feature is shared across all terrorist groups operating in the name of Islam. The vast majority of the victims of the Taliban, for instance, are also Muslims. Hundreds of Shia Muslims have been killed just in the last few years. And I have lost many close friends in similar attacks on the Ahmadi Muslims in Paki
