The Darkest Secret Of War " Rape "

Image
Sexual violence is one of the most horrific weapons of war, an instrument of terror used against women. Yet huge numbers of men are also victims. In this harrowing report, Will Storr travels to Uganda to meet traumatised survivors, and reveals how male rape is endemic in many of the world's conflicts. Of all the secrets of war, there is one that is so well kept that it exists mostly as a rumour. It is usually denied by the perpetrator and his victim. Governments, aid agencies and human rights defenders at the UN barely acknowledge its possibility. Yet every now and then someone gathers the courage to tell of it. This is just what happened on an ordinary afternoon in the office of a kind and careful counsellor in Kampala, Uganda. For four years Eunice Owiny had been employed by Makerere University's Refugee Law Project (RLP) to help displaced people from all over Africa work through their traumas. This particular case, though, was a puzzle. A female client was having marital d

" Jesus Taught Me Islam " Emmanuel Adebayor

Image
Almost a month after announcing his reversion to Islam, Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor revealed reasons behind his conversion, saying that similarities between the two faiths led him to the truth. “Jesus (pbuh) taught that there is only One God and Only God should be worshipped as taught in Deut 6:4, Mark 12:29. Muslims also believe this as taught in the Qur’an verse 4:171,” Adebayor was quoted by The Herald. Adebayor was talking about one of 13 reasons behind his decision to embrace Islam after being seen taking Shahada, or declaration of faith, in a YouTube video posted online last month. Clothed in a white robe, Adebayor in declaration of his new faith said; “Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah” (..and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah). Among the reasons behind his reversion to Islam was that prophet Jesus (pbuh) didn’t eat pork like Muslims who consider pigs and their meat filthy and unhealthy to eat. Words like “As Salaamu Alaikum” (Peace be w

WHY AFRICAN ELDERS STOP TALKING ABOUT SEX TO THE YOUTH

Image
Today, many young people of African descent - both at home and abroad - lament their parents' prudish attitudes towards sex. Most of us grew up around parents who never displayed their affection for each other in front of us, parents who never talked to us about sex except to warn us to abstain before marriage. We assume that our parents didn’t tell us about these things because they are old-fashioned and traditional, they are African after all, unlike those white people who are so open with their affections and sex. When even our grandparents are surprised that we seem to know about sex, this reinforces the myth of the prudish African. If our parents are hush-hush about sex, and our grandparents are the same, our ancestors must have been the same and it must have always been this way. But the truth is that it wasn’t always like this. Although there is still so little research into pre-colonial African sexuality, the little information available points to the complete opposite

A Nigerian doctor has been fêted by the federal government in recognition of his astounding Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.0, a near-impossible feat, at a Russian university in 2013. Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday honoured Dr Victor Olalusi, a young medical doctor who scored a GPA of 5.0 to graduate at the Russian National Research Medical University (RNRMU). Olalusi, who studied in Moscow under the Russia-Nigeria Bilateral Education Agreement, was the top performer in medical studies in the entire Russian Federation that year, reports Entertainment Express. The young Nigerian doctor is reportedly not new to academic grandeur. Indeed, Dr MacJohn Nwaobiala, the Permanent Secretary in the education ministry said many Nigerian students are brilliant but Olalusi was a genius. Melinda Gates and Water Scarcity in Africa

Image
Melinda Gates is wife of the world’s richest man, Bill Gates. Both run the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a philanthropy “dedicated to helping all people lead healthy, productive lives”. Melinda in a recent visit to Malawi helped the women of the Gawanini family, with whom she stayed collect drinking water. She carried 20 liters and and she says “it was tough”. “Chrissy (middle) is carrying about 40 liters. Many women do this every day,” she adds. What a way to empathise with the world’s poor. Over now to the Foundation to help the Malawi poor get piped, drinkable water to their homes. In raising community awareness, it is important to understand the root causes of problems. Many illnesses related to water security come from poverty and exploitation. For the people who collect and carry water — usually women and children — water scarcity can mean traveling long distances in search of water. Collecting and carrying water over long distances causes many health problems. F
