GIRLS RIGHT TO LEARN WITHOUT FEAR

Image
NEW YORK, 12 March 2013 - Last week, UNGEI joined partners, Plan International, UNICEF (Education) and 10x10 to organize a side event to the 57th session of the Commission of the Status of Women (CSW) entitled: A Girl’s Right to Learn without Fear: Working to End Gender-Based Violence at School. Held at the UNICEF House in New York on 5 March, participants included members of international agencies, governments, NGOs and permanent missions to the United Nations. UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, Geeta Rao Gupta provided the welcoming remarks and stated, “Surprisingly, given the impact of violence on girls, teachers, families and communities, school-related gender-based violence is often unremarked upon and taken for granted. At the same time, we know that education can give girls particular resources to challenge gender-based violence.” The Minister of Culture and Sport Finland, Mr Paavo Erkki Arhinmäki, was invited to provide reflections on school-r...

GIRLS AROUND THE WORLD FACE VIOLENCE AND DISCRIMINATION

Image
Millions of girls around the world face violence and discrimination due both to their sex and age, in a variety of settings – including on the way to school and at school.  As the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) began its 57th session this week, the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) called for concerted action to develop national plans to end school-related gender-based violence. Education is an inextricable right of every child.  Yet, millions of girls around the world today are denied this right. “Violence against children in schools is a violation of their fundamental human rights,” said Nora Fyles, head of the UNGEI secretariat. “Violence also breaks down trust in the entire school system. It has far-reaching effects that can damage the psyche of children, interfering with learning, and thereby eroding the potential positive impact that school can have on a society.” Between 500 million and 1.5 billion children experience violence ...

Many working on the issue of girls’ education are concerned about talk of a job well done on millennium development goal two:  achieve universal primary education . While primary enrolment figures may have reached reassuring rates in many countries, levels of school completion, transition and the quality of education still needs to be addressed.  In response to such concerns, Hillary Clinton and former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard announced the launch of  Collaborative for Harnessing Ambition and Resources for Girls’ Education (Charge)  last September. The initiative emerged from the  Brookings Center for Universal Education  and its global partners and commits over $600m (£403m)to reach 14 million girls over five years.  Charge seeks to tackle the “second generation issues” of girls’ education, which  Brookings describes as : the 30 million girls who are still not in school; beyond parity – a quality education for girls; ...
