Art and activism: Rocky Dawuni on bringing diverse people and cultures together through music

For a decade-and-a-half, Rocky Dawuni has been singing around the world, while campaigning for clean water, women’s empowerment and AIDS awareness. On a nearly full moon night, Rocky Dawuni’s reggae at the majestic Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur brought a capacity crowd to its feet. The dreadlock-sporting Ghanaian-American’s Afro roots music is meant to achieve exactly that kind of engagement, apart from being danceable and elevating. Born to Muslim Dagomba parents, on March 5, 1992, Abdallah Inusah Babamu was raised in Zogbeli which he holds dear to his heart. He is known by his stage name as Gaffachi. Many of his peers consider him as a ‘born rapper’ due to his musical dexterity. Gaffachi is from a family of 5, which he’s the second born. Unlike other youngsters, Gaffachi despite growing up in a difficult community, had his primary Education and junior high school in Al-Markazia primary school and Nyohini Presby Junior High School, respectively. He also proceeded to Damango secondary school, where he had his senior high education. To him, such achievement is credited to his parents who always want to see him get educated. Tamale-based artiste Fancy Gadam will perform at this year’s MTN FA Cup final on 29 October. Organizers have confirmed the reigning VGMA New Artiste will be one of the attractions when Asante Kotoko play Hearts of Oak at the Tamale Sports Stadium. Fancy Gadam’s artistry and popularity are expected to draw huge crowds to the stadium. ”Renowned dancehall artiste Fancy Gadam will be at the Tamale Sports Stadium on October 29 to enthral the fans,” FA Cup Committee chairman ES Okraku stated during the unveiling of the official Mascot for the finals on Tuesday.
