THE Agricultural Value chain Mentorship project (AVCMP)
The Northern region of Ghana has
been recognized as the bread basket of the country for growing staples | ||
There is however a lot of agricultural challenges such as low yield due to limited access to input, limited access to market, poor soil fertility, poor equipment service and food insecurity confronting the small holder farmer.
Various interventions by development partners have been carried out to address these identified problems.
One of such intervention is the Agricultural Value chain Mentorship project-AVCMP
Founded by AGRA, with founding from DANIDA.
The AVCMP is implemented by CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute-SARI,
The International Centre for Soil Fertility and Agricultural Development (IFDC), and
Ghana Agricultural Association’s Business Information Centre (GAABIC).
These institutions worked very close with other partners such as Ministry of food and Agriculture-MOFA, Stanbicbank, UT bank and Snapi aba in providing capacity building, credit, and extension servicing to farmers, SMEs and input dealers.
CSIR-SARI is leading the implementation of the productivity component.

AWARENESS CREATION ON ISFM

Diverse ways and means by the stakeholders were used to create awareness on Integrated Soil Fertility Management.

Some of the methods used were by the establishment of the farmer learning Centers, the use of radio, and videos.
| ||
With the Farmer learning Centers, demonstration fields were established in the various beneficiary communities by qualified farm technicians from the ministry of food and agriculture.

Video was also used as a tool to communicate ISFM technologies to farmers.

The productivity component of the AVCMP had a partnership with countrywise communication-Ghana which is a video production organization.
| ||||||||||||
The idea was to use video as a communication tool to reach as many farmers as possible in their local languages.
| ||||||||||||
Through video shows, these farmers can receive trainings on best agronomic practices, including the transfer of new technologies.

In this case, a number of practical training videos were produced and translated into local languages. | ||||||||||||
These translated practical agricultural training videos were screened in the various beneficiary communities at night hours giving the opportunity to many more farmers who had retired from their farm work to watch and learn from these translated training videos.

The training videos which were screened in the beneficiary communities included videos on rice, soya beans and maize. | ||||||||||||
In all, the training videos were screened in about two hundred communities reaching about thirty thousand farmers.

The staged drama on integrated soil fertility management which was written and performed in the local language waslater on captured on video and showed in various communities. | ||||||||||||
