Wiyaala and other Nobel African Women at Vlisco 170 Anniversary in Togo

On 15 August this year, Vlisco officially turned 170 years old. Because of its strong connection with Africa, the brand will mark the big event by honoring African women, as they’ve played an indispensable role in their success. Throughout the rest of the year Vlisco will host activities to inspire, interact and engage with their customers.

As part the 170anniversary activities Vlisco will be holding another eventful activity in Togo today, among the special guest are Ghana’s Wiyaala.  The songstress and ‘’ lioness of Africa ‘’ has in the past months toured Europe and gave a stunning peformance at the Vodafone Legends Nights with The “Umqombothi” Princess Of Africa Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

Vlisco’s story began in 1846, when founder Pieter Fentener van Vlissingen started the company in the Netherlands. Certainly, Vlisco’s founder would be very pleased to see that its crafted textiles, known as Wax Hollandais, are so cherished and beloved in West and Central Africa still today.

In celebration of this anniversary, Vlisco pays tribute to all African women who have always cherished and adored its fabrics. Vlisco honors their passion for authentic Wax Hollandais and feels privileged to be a part of their rich culture. They are also grateful for the women’s creativity of turning Vlisco fabrics in elegant and stylish fashion.

The Afro-pop singer will headline the Djimba World Music Festival. The concert will be held at Wa Community Centre, and will also feature many surprise acts. Wiyaala told Refinery29, in an interview on 2nd December 2016, “When I do a song like "Rock My Body", I want people to know that I, as an African woman, can be the one choosing which man will rock my body… in the video, it is me you see going shopping for a man at Aishaman market!”

‘’Through her music, she seeks to promote choice for young women and fight back against practices like child marriage and FGM, using her lyrics to raise awareness of such issues. Because of this commitment, she was recently invited to perform in the UK as part of the “Voices of the Revolution” collective, which saw an organisation called In Place of War gather together an inspirational lineup of female musicians from around the world to share ideas and perform throughout the summer.’’ - Refinery29
