It is not every day you see a woman dedicate her life to taken care of children who are not hers. But there are exceptional ones and of such women is Mama Laadi. Mama Laadi is a community nurse in Bolga from the Upper East region of Ghana. The spirit child documentary by Genie Films tells a story of a selfless woman passion to give home to kids abandoned by their families through no fault of theirs.

Mama Laadi a street child once before has made her mission in life to give shelter and hope to the abandoned children in her community.

Most of the children who live at Mama Laadi’s Foster Home are either abuse victims, or “spirit children”— children born with some form of deformity and deemed to be possessed by evil spirits.

The lucky ones are the kids left to rot on the streets are because because in most families’ spirit children are killed by local medicine men with poisonous concoctions with the notion of casting the evil spirit away. Her foster home is not your regular orphanage or shelter for the abandoned kids. She runs a family system in her shelter. In this home, kids are cared for and loved like they are living in a real family by blood.

With the support of her sponsors, Mama Laadi has had over 100 street children pass through her home. Some of them have gone on to finish tertiary and are employed, while others are still in school. One of the kids described her as Jesus Christ because of her unconditional love for them. Another says ‘’she is exceptional and cannot imagine what would have happened to me if I wasn’t rescue by Mama Laadi’’. She expresses her admiration and also thank her for the love and care she has for them.
