The story of Amina; Azalli – Making of the movie

There have been many movies on Kayayei in the country to depict the horrible treatment that girls go through in this form of business. Kwabena Gyansah and his Anansi Entertainment crew latest movie, Azali is also adding to the tall list of Kayayie movie but with a different twist to the narrative of the story.

Azali tells the story of Amina born in poverty with a bleak future in a village in the north is sent to Accra to seek for greener pastures by her Mum. Amina is taken from her village by another woman who is said to be in that business of helping young girls in the village to travel out.  But unknown to her Mum, this said woman is engage in child trafficking. 

Amina in her pursuit to return to her mother after been a victim for child trafficking is raped, goes into prostitution and also find love and her long-lost father in the end. The movie is directed by Kwabena Gyansah and produced by Anansi Entertainment Limited. This is the maiden feature film by the production company and the director. The cast for the film includes Akorfa Edjeani, Adjetey Anang, Ama K. Abebrese and Peter Ritchie and Sherifatu Issah. The other new entries are Alhassan Asana, Mohammed Hafiz and Mohammed Rahama, the casting was done both in Accra and Tamale.

In an interview with the director of the soon to be released movie, Kwabena Gyansah says ‘’the distance and the language were their biggest challenge in shooting the movie’’. He explains how they had to travel each day to different locations for filming but said ‘’it is worth it because we are assured of getting the right location to depict the setting of the movie’’. He concluded Amina is set in both Northern region and Greater Accra.



The first part of the filming took place in the northern region. The places that was shot in northern region include Wovogu, Nyakpala, Tamale business district and a farming community on the Tamale Salga road.  The second filming took place in some parts of Accra that included Agbobloshei One striking thing to watch out for in this movie is Akorfa Adjeani and Adjetey Annang speaking Dagbani. Akorfa Adjeaani plays the role of Amina’s mother while Adjetey Annang happens to be her uncle. In their role, they are expected to speak Dagbanli.

Originally, Ama K. Abebrese was supposed to play the role of Amina’s mother but she turned it down because she could not learn the Dagbanli language. A tentative date has not been set for the release of the movie. But with the trailer out, northerners cannot wait to see how they have been represented in the movie.
