Naana Hawah, Mardia & Radia Hails WATERAID GHANA

Naana Hawah joined the WASH, thus Water, Sanitation and Hygiene campaign when she volunteered to feature in Rafiu Fish short film series Water and Culture. the short film series also features two junior high school students, Radia and Mardia. Since then the three girls have taken the path with Rafiu Fishbone to campaign for Wash. Hawah on behalf of Radia and Mardia hailed Wateraid Ghana for a marvellous work done since they began working in Ghana in the year 1985.
WaterAid Ghana has done a lot for the past 30 years, since 1985 to improve water, sanitation and hygiene delivery in Ghana. WaterAid Ghana has done direct water provision through Bole holes, pipe extension, and hand drive wells to a little over 1,100 people in some of districts in Ghana. Every day 4,000 children die from illnesses like diarrhea, dysentery, and cholera caused by dirty water and unhygienic living conditions. We can’t fight malnutrition without tackling the diseases that contribute to it. As part of our integrated approach to hunger, we’re getting safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services to communities in need all over the world. During emergencies, Wateraid Ghana truck water into affected areas and installs storage tanks and reservoirs. Where water is scarce or unsafe, we drill and decontaminate wells, install hand-pumps, protect natural springs, tap aquifers, rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, and pipe water into hard-to-reach villages and health centers. To prevent outbreaks of disease during a crisis, Wateraid teams distribute hygiene kits and build latrines and hand-washing stations. In communities at risk, we construct water filters made from basic materials and teach healthy practices like hand-washing, cooking with clean utensils, and drawing water from protected sources. Wateraid commitment to community participation ensures long-term capacity: we train community-based water committees to manage their water and sanitation infrastructure themselves, and organize village health teams to model good sanitation and hygiene practices for their communities long after we leave an area.
The series also features community members and elders, the language used in the series is dagbani, a local dialect in Tamale, half the population in Northern region speak and understand this dialect. Hawah said Rafiu Fishbone promised to begin the next series with English subtitles. The series is Written, Directed, Edited and Produced by Rafiu Fishbone. Hawah confirmed that Rafiu Fishbone is working on a documentary on ACCESS TO CLEAN POTABLE WATER and after which Rafiu Fishbone will resume working on series. Hawah said the first series was done with a low budget and they were less experience in acting too. She added that Rafiu Fishbone was very caring and patient with them as they missed most of their lines. Hawah concluded by saying with Rafiu Fishbone Has written countless articles, reports and stories on water, Sanitation and hygiene, and the Campaign for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene will yield positive results, she called on NGO and Government to help Rafiu Fishbone with the Campaign. 4,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable water-related diseases. One in eight people lacks access to enough clean water to meet their basic needs. More than half of the hospital beds in developing countries are taken by people suffering from diarrheal diseases. Half of girls who stop attending primary school in Africa do so because of the lack of safe and private toilets. WaterAid has also worked within government of Ghana policies, supported government to develop new policies and review existing policies and still count their successes throughout their 30years of existence in Ghana. Looking forward to celebrating their 30years in November 2015, WaterAid Ghana wants to use their Healthy Start project to reach out to Ghanaians, and healthy start means providing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities at health centres to make sure mothers and children are healthy, and newborns are healthy too.
