The Return of Bandana ''69 and SM'' Movement
A
bandana is a type of large, usually colorful, kerchief, usually worn on the
head or around the neck of a person or pet and is not considered to be a
hat. Bandanas are frequently printed in a paisley pattern and are most often
used to hold hair back, either as a fashionable head accessory, or for
practical purposes.
Originated
in India as bright coloured handkerchiefs of silk and cotton with spots in
white on coloured grounds, chiefly red and blue. The silk styles were made of
the finest quality yarns, and were very popular. Bandana prints for clothing
were first produced in Glasgow from cotton yarns, and are now made in many
qualities. The term, at present, generally means a fabric in printed styles,
whether silk, silk and cotton, or all cotton.
American
gang culture
Colors
can be worn as a means of communication or identification, as with the
prominent California criminal gangs, the Bloods, the Crips, the Norteños, and the
Sureños. In gang subcultures, the bandana could be worn in a pocket or around
the head. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, the Bloods and the Crips wore red and
blue paisley bandanas respectively as a signifier of gang affiliation through
the display of their gang colors.
Charles
Nii Armah Mensah Jnr formally known as Bandana, is a dancehall/raglife artiste
who scored a major hit with his single, Moko Ho (Bandana from Ghana). Spotting
a dress code heavy with the colours of the Ghana national flag in the video to
the song, it was clear that he wanted to take Ghanaian music to the world
(outanational as he puts it). Now known as Shatta Wale.
Award-winning dancehall
musician, Shatta Wale is best known for his biggest breakthrough hit song
Dancehall King which led to winning the Artiste of the Year at the 2014 edition
of the Ghana Music Awards. Shatta Wale has in recent times demonstrated that he
can act as well by featuring in his first ever movie titled Never Say Never
featuring Charles Kofi Bucknor, Edward Kufuor and Paulina Oduro and also
featuring in Shattered Lives along with Bisa K'dei and Majid Michel.
Recently Northern Region has been the hub of entertainment shows and concerts, the likes of Davido of Nigeria, Shatta Wale, Stonebouy, Samini have been to the region capital, Tamale for musical events, and thankfully the region has also up rooted its own stars, the likes of Maccasio, Fancy Gadam, Nuru, IsRahim, Dboy, Nazz, Mr Fizz, Don Sigli, One9ra, Saani, Nandos and lots more.
Ahead
of the much anticipated January 1st show, titled TOO BIG CONCERT, Sherif
Abdul-Majeed, known in showbiz as Maccasio will headline the TOO BIG Concert alongside
Shatta Wale which comes off at the Tamale Sports Stadium on 1st January 2017. Maccasio
is no doubt the most stylish and well fashioned artist in Tamale, young and
good looking, he has the swag and most importantly he is the luckiest artist to
emerge in the Northern with such high spirit and with a number of awards to his
credit.
Bandana’s,
for the TOO BIG CONCERT has been released into the Tamale market. It’s still
not clear whose idea it is, Shatta Wale or Maccasio but whoever is behind this
return of Bandana, the aim has been achieved, because the youth in the Tamale
metropolis are seen with the Bandana on their heads, most especially the 69
fans.
