NORSAAC Young Female Parliamentarians Call on Regent of Dagbon and MCE

Yendi is a town and the capital of Yendi Municipal district, district in the Northern Region of north Ghana. Yendi has a 2012 settlement population of 52,008 people. The lack of a TOILET makes women and girls a target for sexual assault as they go to the toilet in the open, late at night.  Many get bitten by snakes as they squat in the grass. 2.5 billion people across the world don’t have somewhere safe to go to the toilet (WHO / Unicef) 1 billion people don’t have access to any sanitation at all and openly defecate (WHO / Unicef)

The Young Female Parliamentarians of Yendi Secondary  of  the Young Urban Women of NORSAAC  engaged the Regent of Dagbon and the Municipal chief executive of Yendi on the lack of toilet facilities for the Female Dormitories in the school.

Most of the Challenges women face in life can in one way or the other have varied effects on men and society at a large. For this reason NORSAAC formed  Young Female Parliamentarians.

According to the information on Norssac facebook page,

'' This  Young Female Parliamentarians sighted that this problem of lack of toilet facilities has exposed them to snake bites and attempts by unscrupulous men to rape them.

The Reagent of Yendi in his response said  "You have come at the right time, the palace has been asked by local Government to provide a list of institutions that need such facilities. I will add Yendi SHS to the list. females especially should not lack such facilities"

The MCE also shared the plans of the assembly to build toilets and provide Street lights for the school. He express his joy at the confidence of the girls in demanding these basic needs of students ''

NORSAAC was founded in 2002 as a gender focused community-based advocacy organisation mobilizing youth to discuss and find ways of addressing sexual and reproductive health issues in schools. Since then, NORSAAC has taken a greater interest in sustainable livelihoods for youth and women, while integrating reproductive health issues and women’s rights and participation.
