Singer Pays Tribute to Late Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama
On March 3rd, the 3rd Vice
President of the 4th Republic was born. He was Ghana's first Muslim Vice-President.
Born in Yendi, in the Northern Region of Ghana. Yendi has a 2012 settlement population of
52,008 people. The overlord of the Dagbon Traditional Kingdom is the Ya-Na,

Alhaji Aliu Mahama was indeed the
most efficient hard working Vice president ever in the history of Ghana. As the
first Northerner to be Vice President of Ghana for eight years in the political
history of Ghana, The late Aliu Mahama was a highly disciplined man, lover of
peace and development, philanthropist of high repute and conducted himself
creditably as both Vice President and even as a private citizen.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama was a Ghanaian
politician who was Vice-President of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January
2009. A member of the New Patriotic Party, he was a Dagomba by tribe.
Aliu
Mahama as a young man studied at the Government Secondary School in Tamale from
1960 to 1967 for his Ordinary and Advanced Level Certificates. He proceeded to
the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi from 1967 to
1971 where he obtained the B.Sc. in Building Technology.
The noble son of the North started
his working career at the Bolgatanga regional office of the State Construction
Corporation as an Engineer and contractor from 1972 to 1975. Aliu Mahama was
promoted to Assistant Regional Manager and posted to the Koforidua Regional
Office of the Corporation from 1975 to 1976. From June 1976 to August 1982, Aliu
Mahama held the position of Regional Manager in charge of the Northern Region,
Tamale.
Aliu Mahama successfully established
his own civil engineering and general construction firm, LIDRA Limited, and
became its Managing Director In 1982. He was Chairman of the Northern Regional
Contractors Association from 1996 until the December 2000 elections.
Aliu Mahama was also an Alumnus of
the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). The noble
son of the North obtained two certificates from the Institute in Project
Planning and Management and in Leadership.
Aliu Mahama was a Councilor on the
Yendi District Council and was the Chairman of the Economic Development
Committee of the Tamale-Louisville Sister State Committee in 1978 and 1990
respectively
Aliu Mahama was a board member of
several secondary schools in the Northern Region including the Tamale Polytechnic;
he also served as a Board member of the Ghanaian Premier League side Real
Tamale United, where he was a founding member.
16th November 2012 was the saddest day
in the political history of not only Ghana but for Northerners, at the age of
66, Alhaji Aliu Mahama died from a heart-related condition and complications
from a stroke. Alhaji Aliu Mahama almost 4 months after Ghanaian President John
Atta Mills died.
That was after Alhaji Aliu Mahama two
terms as Vice-President, and lost to Nana Akufo Addo on his bid to secure the
New Patriotic Party's nomination for the 2008 presidential election.
