Shanti Samsara- Ricky Kej- ONE SONG- Feat. Rocky Dawuni, Wouter Kellerman, Darlene Koldenhoven

It is not every day that an all-star cast of stellar Grammy Award winning musicians from across the world comes together in the city to create mesmerising musical works of art. That rare phenomenon happened in the recent meet and greet event organised at Indigo Live Music Bar by music producer, composer, conservationist and Grammy Award winner Ricky Kej. Featuring American vocalist Darlene Koldenhoven, South African flautist Wouter Kellerman, Ghanaian vocalist Rocky Dawuni, Vietnamese oan bau instrumentalist Hai Phuong, Mohan Veena player Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Tibetan monks of Sherabling among others, the artistes were in India to record a new special edition of Ricky’s world music album for environmental consciousness Shanti Samsara.

In an exclusive chat with MetroPlus, Wouter says it is always fun to come back to Bengaluru and spend time with Ricky. “We always love spreading a message with our music. And when the message is a strong musical stand for the environment, it is very exciting to collaborate across cultural lines and get together with performers from so many different backgrounds.”
While the first edition had more than 300 artistes and musicians from around the world contributing to the making of the album’s 14 tracks and four music videos, this revamped edition promises to be all the more spectacular with equal number of new songs as a double CD set.

Wouter goes on to say that this entire act of collaboration and the music that they are making will have people experience the fact that music transcends boundaries. “It is almost magical that we can come together from completely different backgrounds and make music that everyone can relate to. It is quite a big surprise how well that works.”
It is a multi-national effort, says the artiste who had won the Grammy with Ricky in Winds of Samsarawith his focus on roots music. He adds: “And a very ambitious one as well. I’ve had mind-blowing experiences in India working with musicians here. The kind of discipline, dedication and expressiveness they have is special in India.”
He looks forward to continue to collaborate with Ricky over the years. “But we don’t really plan much ahead. Getting these artistes together for this special edition just fell into place. We enjoy the moment and will continue to make responsible music.”
Zither player Nguyen Thi Hai Phuong is a flag bearer of traditional music and is touched with the warm familiar feeling of tradition she has received in India. “There is nothing here that I don’t love. And it is all the more lovely to work on such an enterprising project. I try to put together my music with the others and I am very happy with the results. It is great to work with similar people with strong foundations in their rooted music.”

Singer-songwriter Rocky, who performs his signature ‘Afro Roots’ sound with a mixture of reggae, Afrobeat, highlife and soul music, is equally kicked about being in India. “Our countries have a lot in common. Spreading the message that music can bring people together unites us. I have a lot of respect for Indian music. This particular musical effort is pushing the level of collaboration and it is a colossal coming together of people and culture,” he points out.”
Going philosophical, the artiste says he hopes people have a sense of gratitude and understanding that we are put on earth to be each other’s keeper when they listen to this music. “We live our lives to the fullest only when we live it in service to others. Through our music, I hope people can feel that energy.”
Rocky has an interesting take on how important India is to the world.
“Be it culture, food, religion or spirituality, the people of India have been a source of inspiration to all of humanity. In a time where you find an erosion of morality and spirituality, India provides hope for the future. It has been able to uphold, nurture and be a custodian of these traditions for thousands of years. When the world is so dry, we can always come to India to replenish ourselves.”
