University for Development Students Alhassan Danaa and Akadiiwen Allampiung Jacob have together come up with a brilliant idea to help promote backyard garden and can also be expand to a large farm. Here is what they intend to do to improve the dying agriculture sector in our countries if they get funding and all the support needed Dr Alhassan Danaa explained

As part of our intention of improving plantation of trees in the rural communities of the country, “the team of inventors” has come out with a local way of nursing trees and watering system that is suitable for all households and rural populace.

The tin/plastic garden is meant to use emptied tomato (big size) tins connected with water hosts to a storage jar of water that can that can operate to give water supply automatically in a convenient way at the household level. This system at the time of droughts and or dried season can use the household waste water system filtered with charcoal, or sea sand or, rocks as water source for the nursery at home.

The tin/plastic garden also makes use of plastics (sizable) buckets in place of the tins (tomato tin) nursery connected to the same automatic watering system for adequate supply of water for plants.

The tin/plastic garden can also serve as irrigation system when seedlings are finally transplanted into the field. This system gives the plant adequate of supply of water in the field and also saves labor at the same time.  

By the use of the tin/plastic garden we can grow vegetables for home consumption which at long last would save family expenditure level. Treated water from the home would also prevent the growth of mosquitoes and breeding germs in the household.

This project can be implemented at both the household level and in the farm land. Vegetabl,  economic trees and other flowers can be grown in the home using the tin garden. At the farm level, this can also be use to nurse plants as well as serve as irrigation system in the field.

Materials needed for implementations

Some of the material that would be needed to implement the project are:

PVC pipe	Tomato tins (emptied)
Plastic containers	Bulb valves
Water storage thank	Plastic pipes
Jerican (kuffour gallons)	PVC angles
PVC glue	Aredite glue

How it operates

The water supply comes from the whit jerrican, flows through the plastic pipe, to the empty pen cases and to the tomato tin containers where we have a cloth covering the mouth of the pen inside the Tin and soil is filled. The soil would then take the water from the soaked cloth covering the mouth of the pen and the plant also takes from the soil. The plant then grows till it’s time to be transplanted into the field.  

In the field we can still use this kind of a system for watering where each Tin in would be perforated from the lower part and its placed under each plant and the tins are connected to water source hence when water enters in the Tin, water flows through the perforated holes and water the plant evenly.

In place of the TINS we can also use plastic container and connect them to PVC pipe where the same ideology of the TIN garden is applied.

In other not to over flood the system with water, we have a receiver TIN/container where water from the jerrican enters and then move to other Tins through an automatic controller, when there is excess water the system locks and when the water is drained the system opens again.

This system is so simple that, it can be used in the dried season or period of drought where household waste water can be filleted using charcoal or rocks to get clean water to be stored and used to water plants.  

Benefits

This Garden is to encourage growing of trees in a simple way by all people than can correct and bring normal rains.

This garden would also be very good for back yard vegetable growing especially if jerians are used.

The system too is easy to use no skills is needed to operate or use it hence very good for all local housing.
